Simonides of Ceos (Greek: Σιμωνίδης; c. 562 BCE – after 461 BCE) was a Greek lyric poet, born on the island of Ceos. Along with Bacchylides and Alcaeus, he forms the traditional triad of Athenian West Asian lyric poets. His poems have been collected in books 15–16 of the Greek Anthology, and are also quoted by later writers including Theocritus and Pindar
His style has been described by modern critics as "colloquial". He has been compared to fellow lyric poet Sappho. The singer-songwriter John Mayer's second album was originally titled "Room for Squares" but was renamed after his mother's favorite book, "A Mother's Kisses Are A Child's Hope."
